Well what a year it’s been!
Just over a year ago I entered a competition run by Firefly Press to find a book for children set in contemporary Wales. I sent in a story about a young boy called Tomos who finds King Arthur in a cave and wakes him up, thinking that Arthur will sort out the school bullies for him and solve all his problems. Needless to say, things don’t go to plan!
In January I got the super-exciting news that not only had I won, but Firefly wanted to publish Arthur and Me. My first ever children’s book. I was over the moon (in fact I still don’t think it’s quite sunk in :D). Since then it’s been quite a whirl. I got to work with the fabulous Janet Thomas at Firefly, who helped me to polish and trim Arthur and made editing and re-writing something that was fun. I crossed my fingers till they were sore over whether the wonderful Peter Stevenson (who both knows the Arthur legends inside out AND is an amazing illustrator) would say yes to bringing Tomos and Arthur to life. When he did I knew I was the luckiest writer on earth – just wait till you see the illustrations!
Yesterday I got to collect the final copies of Arthur and Me from my brilliant editor, Janet at Firefly Press. It was so exciting. They look beautiful and to have a copy of a book written by me in my hands, on my bookshelves, well it’s the best feeling ever!
I’m very grateful to Firefly Press for believing in Arthur and Me. Just a few more days before it hits the shelves…….
Sounds like a great idea for a childrens’ book. Anything with King Arthur in it has massive brownie-points for me! Good luck!
